Shay Mitchell may be best known for starring in the hit teen drama series Pretty Little Liars. But ever since the series ended in 2017, she’s been playing another role: social media influencer.
In 2018, as an ambassador for Bioré, she famously shared a video of herself “using” the brand’s makeup remover... without actually touching it to her face. (Her fans called it “the fakest thing they’ve ever seen.”)
And sponcon (sponsored content) isn’t the only thing she’s faked. Observers also documented evidence of a “fakecation” when Shay posted other people’s travel photos on her Instagram, claiming that they were her own. (One even had a mouse cursor in the corner!)
So all of this got me thinking... what else might be fake about Shay?! Let’s take a look at her beauty evolution over the years and see if we can find out!
From 2010-2012: Pretty Little Liar
At the 2010 TV Guide Hot List Party
Many of our Before & After subjects have been walking the red carpet since childhood. But not Shay—she was 23 when she got her big break on Pretty Little Liars and was suddenly cast into the spotlight. Personally, I’d never have recognized her! Not only is her face shape much fuller, her nose also seems wider and flatter.

In 2011, she started rocking a spray tan (a habit she’s kept up with to this day), but even still, this looks like a different person. Is it because this was before she started styling herself like a Kardashian? Or is it her fuller face? Either way, the changes to come are dramatic.

The following year, Shay gave us a rare glimpse of her naturally curly hair. “When I was younger, I always tried to make it straight,” she said at the time. “I wish I had told myself when I was younger, ‘Stop straightening your hair! Embrace your natural.’” Alas, she didn’t follow her own advice because a decade later, straightened hair is still very much her signature.
From 2013-2015: Upgrading Her Style
At the 2013 Teen Choice Awards
It was in 2013 that Shay really began to upgrade her red carpet style. The first step was a new, lighter brown hair colour and beachy texture, which gave her a completely different look. (I think the key was keeping the roots dark, to match her brows.) Compared to her earlier photos, her face seems narrower. Maybe it was just weight loss, or shedding her baby fat... for now!
At the 2014 Teen Choice Awards
The next year, she made an even bigger impact with a messy fishtail braid and dark, vampy lipstick. (This look put her on the map with beauty editors the world over, including yours truly!) What most people probably didn’t notice at the time is how different her lower face appears compared to only a few years before.
At the 2015 Streamy Awards
I don’t know about you, but I think Shay’s style was a lot more fun and creative before she committed to the Kardashian aesthetic. Here, she mixed things up by deepening her hair colour (and wearing it straight, quelle surprise), pairing it with the “marsala” lip colour that was trendy in 2015. Her eyes also seem more open here, but that might just be the false eyelashes.
